Is freight shipped on certified air carriers? I'm looking at some statistics for air freight traffic and air traffic is differentiated into general aviation and certified route air carriers. I was wondering whether most air freight is shipped using certified route air carriers, or whether a significant portion is shipped using general aviation. (I'm trying to determine fuel efficiency for air freight, so any info on that would be helpful too.) Thanks for the answer--would UPS or FedEx be considered a certified carrier as well?

How does customs brokerage work when shipping freight from the US to Canada? If I were to ship LTL freight from the US to Canada, what paperwork is involved and who handles it? If I understand right, the freight company is in possession of two pieces of paperwork - the BOL and commercial invoice (or Canadian Customs Invoice). But a customs broker is required in Canada, because the freight company can't work with Canadian customs directly? Does the customs broker just fill out a form, or do they inspect the shipment? How is that whole process handled for all involved parties, including the shipper, receiver, freight company, and customs broker?
How many people are in a freight train crew these days? Is there still a fireman? A conductor? In the old days there was a caboose at the end of a long freight train, which I assume contained a conductor or a relief crew or something (?). What is there now? Are trains ever run with just the engineer and nobody else? And how did crews in the caboose ever communicate with the engineer and fireman, in the days when that existed? I'm mainly interested in American railroad practices.

Commerical furniture delivery - How do you send coffee tables by freight? I am in the process of setting up a small furniture making business and I need to know how do you go about sending coffee tables etc that are not flat- packed. I would imagine that you would bubble-wrap the items and then get a freight company like Fedex to pick them up. Is it that easy? Should I consider putting these type of items in crates. The coffee tables I have made would be sent out lndividually to customers. They are not overly expensive and really not that large. But would Fedex etc accept this type of furniture without being crated. If it is OK to send just by bubble-wrapping, what is the best way to do this to ensure the items does not get damaged? I would also be sending out the coffee tables etc to international customers.

Is it possible to hop on board a freight train still? It happened during the Great Depression and people don't associate hobos as guys who jump on board a freight train anymore shouldn't they still do that? Like I've said in that one question I've always had the thought of doing that myself when I had thoughts of running away from home. So is it possible to ride the rails on a freight train anymore?
What is the cheapest way to send domestic Australia-wide freight? I need to send a 25kg package from Sydney to Melbourne by courier. Who is the cheapest transport company to use? What is the difference between a third party logistics provider and a transportation/freight broker? As I understand it, companies outsource their logistics activities to a 3PL provider which takes care of all of that clients logistics functions. But what is a transportation/freight broker? Are they just a company that will match a carrier with a shipper for the lowest price, but not necessarily take over the entire logistics process? Are they just a quick fix while a 3PL provider is a long term deal?

I'm a writer and traveler and I think I am done with the states for a while. What I want to do is get on a cargo or freight ship and wokr there for a while. A few years preferably. See a bit of the world, see the sea and get myself into better shape. I'm an adventurer at heart and I have spent the last seven years of my life traveling around. I really feel a calling to this and I want to dedicate myself to it. So, where do I go from here? I live in Tallahassee, Florida. I have no previous ship experience but for a deckboy I wouldn't really need any. I would prefer a non US ship if possible, but I will take whatever I can get. Any help you good folk could give me would be appreciated.
